Are facelifts performed at a doctor’s office or a hospital?

Typically speaking, would a full facelift require a hospital visit and an overnight stay, or do most surgeons perform the procedure at their own office?

The extent of the neck lift operation is tailored to each patient's needs and can range from:

  • A mini lift: a small skin excision from in-front of the ear that slightly tightens the skin along the jaw line and upper neck in younger patients, to
  • An S-lift: similar to a mini lift with the addition of a subtle tightening of the posterior deeper tissue of the neck (SMAS). This is most appropriate for younger patients, to
  • A lower face and neck lift: an extension of the mini lift that brings the incision higher in front of the ear to the sideburn and further back behind the ear into the hairline to tighten the neck and reposition the deeper soft tissues of the face (SMAS) to efface neck bands, lift the jowls along the jaw line.

Recovery from all of the surgeries is relatively quick and very rarely would necessitate a hospital or overnight stay. Most cases are performed in a certified ambulatory surgery center as an outpatient. Even with a full lower face and neck lift, most patients are doing well enough by 1 week to be out in public.

I've performed almost all my Facelifts under local anesthesia in my office without any problems. It depends on the comfort level and experience of the doctor

Most plastic surgeons perform a facelift in the office operating room. But age and health status along with medical clearance are determining factors in deciding the venue( office vs hospital). If performed in the office setting make sure that the operating room is certified.

A facelift is generally performed at an outpatient surgical center.  Some physicians have an accredited outpatient center in their office.  Most commonly my facelift patients are able to go home the day of surgery, though some may request or require an overnight stay.
