Does a Tummy Tuck remove stretch marks?
Hi. I'm interested in getting a full tummy tuck sometime over the next two months and am wondering what happens with the stretch marks on my belly. Do they disappear at least partially, or is there no effect on them whatsoever?
In addition to being an effective method for body contouring, a tummy tuck removes the unsightly stretch mark scars many women get during pregnancy.
Specifically, tummy tuck surgery removes excess skin and tightens the remaining abdominal skin just under the belly button to the pubic hair line.
Keep in mind that the surgery generally only removes stretch marks on the lower abdomen.
Any stretch marks on the upper half of your abdomen will not be affected by the procedure. You should also be aware that it’s still possible to have residual stretch marks following the procedure -- even if the skin is pulled very tightly.
Tummy tuck scars can be well concealed lower on the abdomen, below the bikini line.
Yes, a tummy tuck is the most effective way to remove stretch marks beneath the belly button. It’s important to set expectations accurately though: There may still be some degree of stretch marks remaining after recovery, but in most cases the appearance of stretch marks is greatly reduced once the loose skin is removed.
Remember, if you have stretch marks on the upper part of the tummy (above the belly button), these typically do not disappear after the tummy tuck procedure.
As well as removing the stretch mark scars, an abdominoplasty will tighten the abdominal muscles and reduce the skin laxity which commonly occurs after pregnancy or major weight loss.
Abdominoplasty does leave an abdominal scar, but in most cases this scar is close enough to the pubic area to be concealed below the panty line. Stretch marks located above the belly button prior to surgery are usually also pulled below during the procedure.
Always be sure to consult with a board-certified plastic surgeon for best results.
Not only will a tummy tuck remove stretch marks, it is the only thing that will. The caveat is that the only stretch marks that will be removed are those on the skin that is cut away in a tummy tuck. If there are stretch marks in the skin that remains, those will, of course, still be there. One benefit of a tummy tuck on the stretch marks that remain is that, once the skin is pulled more tightly, the remaining stretch marks may not be as conspicuous. The unfortunate fact about stretch marks is that they are permanent and only surgical removal of skin will get rid of them. Do not believe all of the hype about this cream, laser , or other magic pill for stretch marks. None of these work. I purchased the only laser that has FDA approval for treating stretch marks and I have found it to be worthless, a real disappointment.

Thank you for the question. Typically a tummy tuck removes the skin below the belly button so if your stretch marks are on the lower part of your belly then yes the stretch marks will disappear. However if you have stretch marks on the upper part of your tummy or the sides then they may not be removed.
