Does Ultrasonic Cavitation Liposuction Work?

A while back, I saw a segment on the news about ultrasonic cavitation liposuction. It was pitched as a 'non-surgical' alternative to liposuction. As someone considering a little liposuction, this seems pretty attractive to me, however; I know things that seem too good to be true tend to be. I'm assuming this doesn't work but I'm curious what doctors think about it? If it does, sign me up for the procedure tomorrow!

Thank you,

Non surgical fat reduction technology has exploded.

While the most definitive treatment is a tummy tuck, liposuction helps to reduce the greatest amount of fat.

For the non surgical treatments Coolsculpting has a 4 year track record with millions of patients treated. The latest innovation in non invasive treatments is the SculpSure treatment.

Each is a brief 30 minute to an hour treatment per area and involves no anesthesia and no incisions.

Your best results are in 3 months and a re-treatment can be done at that time if more fat reduction is desired.

Thank you for your reply Dr. Claytor. I have researched Coolsculpting but have read it can cause an auto-immune disease, which could potentially lead to cancer. What are your thoughts on this?

I have treated hundreds of patients with Coolsculpting and never heard of this complication. This is a safe treatment.

Dear Harris; Thanks for the Swivel inquiry. In my opinion and 35+ years experience in Cosmetic Plastic surgery. The "Gold Standard" is ALWAYS surgical intervention. These non surgical therapies offer extended wait times to see results, if any, and empty your pocket of $$$ slowly before you realize one minor operation could have successfully offered you faster and better results. Thank you for your response Dr. Blinski. I appreciate it.

You’re right to be skeptical as there are many types of liposuction that come to market with lots of hype but little substance. Ultrasonic liposuction (also known as VASER Liposelection) does offer some real advantages for certain patients and certain types of fat cells.

Ultrasonic liposuction is thought to show better results than traditional liposuction when working with fibrous type fat. This kind of fat is more common on the back and sides, so the advantages of ultrasonic liposuction for body sculpting will somewhat depend on your specific situation.

In my experience ultrasonic liposuction results in a lower risk of injury to blood vessels, as well as the surrounding nerves and tissue. Whether or not it’s right for you is something that would have to be assessed during a consultation.

For your safety’s sake, please remember to only consult with board-certified plastic surgeons.

Please note that when patients ask about "ultrasonic" liposuction they are often asking about two different things. This is a common point of confusion.

“Ultrasonic assisted liposuction” is similar to traditional liposuction where fat cells are removed via cannulas inserted through incisions. The only difference between ultrasonic assisted lipo and traditional lipo is that the ultrasonic procedure is assisted by ultrasound waves. These waves liquefy the fat with ultrasonic energy beforehand to improve the efficacy of the procedure. This makes it easier to extract larger volumes of fat and allows for the use of smaller cannulas  -- which typically results in less swelling and bruising. This technique is also often called Vaser fat removal.

Ultrasonic assisted liposuction is not to be confused with “external ultrasonic liposuction” which is a non-surgical fat reduction and body contouring procedure that requires no incisions at all. In this non-invasive technique, high frequency ultrasound-emitting paddles are used to "melt" unwanted fat without having to make incisions. In this procedure, there is no direct fat removal. The destroyed fat cells are naturally discarded by the body over a period of weeks.

While the non-invasive technique may seem lower risk, there is still the potential for nerve damage and a loss of sensation in the treated area. It is also less effective and definitive than invasive liposuction and may require multiple treatments in order to see a result.

Which liposuction treatment is right for you will depend on the consultation you have with your plastic surgeon and your specific goals. For safety and general peace of mind, only consult with a board-certified plastic surgeon.

Ok here is the Bottom line. I am a surgeon and I perform Liposuction! That removes the cells that contain fat. My spa (la-Piel) offers cavitation as well as SculpSure. The Cavitation is a series of treatments  in which the target zone is treated with ultra sound energy. This energy shakes those same fat cells  and causes them to "leak Fat"! It is as close to "Spot Reduction" as you can get without actually destroying the cells. SculpSure is Laser powered (Through the skin) fat destruction.  It like liposuction may offer a more permanent solution!
