How are liposuction and a tummy tuck different?

I'm trying to understand the difference between liposuction and a tummy tuck because I need to know which one would be best suited for my situation. My situation is that I have a 'spare tire' where my waist should be! I'm otherwise in quite good shape for my age and the number of children I've had (56 and 3). I just can't seem to make a dent in it--even with diet and exercise. It seems like what would help for my situation would be a tummy tuck, from where the excess stuff is located. But maybe what I actually need is liposuction. This is my dilemma.

Liposuction removes fat from under the skin, tummy tuck removes excess fat, skin, and tightens the loose muscle patients develop during pregnancy.  The two operations are quite different.  You'd need to be evaluated in person, or at least post some photos so you can get a better and more clear answer.

Thank you for the question and at a consultation your surgeon will be able to tell you which procedure would be best for you.  That said an abdominoplasty removed excess skin and fat while liposuction removes fat.  Given your age and pregnancy history you are probably a better candidate for an abdominoplasty possibly with liposuction

Thank you for sharing your question.  If you have excess skin on your abdomen you are most likely going to need a Tummy Tuck.  I am guessing that you have abdominal muscle separation, which most women have after having children.  The only way to correct this is by tightening the muscles, which is part of a Tummy Tuck.  You would be a great candidate for Liposuction if you have fat deposits but no excess skin, and no abdominal muscle separation.  Most tummy tucks include Liposuction.  I hope this was helpful to you.

Abdominoplasty Before and After Photos

You did not send photos from your history it is most likely that you need a tummy tuck. Of course, the only sure way of knowing is by being examined. You should consult with a Board Certified PS. Good luck!

The dilemma of abdominoplasty versus abdominoplasty+liposuction versus liposuction alone really depends on the quality of your skin, the amount of excess skin you have, and the fat content of that spare tire. In most cases, sight-unseen the combination of abdominoplasty and liposuction gives the best result. But your question really deserves a visit to your local board-certified plastic surgeon :)
