How can I confirm a doctor is certified to do liposuction?
My friend recommended that I go to the same doctor that did her liposuction. Their website says they are certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and by the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery, but I don’t see anything that confirms they are certified to do liposuction. Can anyone help me understand what this means?
The first thing is to make sure they are certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. The American Board of Cosmetic Surgery is not a board that is recognized by the specialist certifying committee. Secondly, when you are at your consultation, make sure you look at photographic results. Unfortunately, these can be retouched to give better than realistic results. Most importantly, is to talk to friends or acquaintances who have had liposuction and really liked their results just like your friend did. I would go to see him/her first and ask to speak to other patients. Make sure that you like the doctor and that all of your questions are answered satisfactorily.
Dr. Ken Stein
When a Plastic Surgeon is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. That means that the Dr is fully qualified to perform all aspects of plastic surgery including liposuction. There is no special certification for liposuction just like there is no special certification for other cosmetic procedures such as rhinoplasty or breast surgery.
