How long does it take to do a mommy makeover?

I am less scared of the procedure and more scared of how long I will be under general anesthesia.  How long does the average mommy makeover take to perform? I understand it will depend on how many different procedures are being done, but what would you say is standard?

The answer to your question on how long mommy makeover surgery takes depends on the different procedures you plan on having done. The number of procedures you choose will directly impact the amount of time you'll be under anesthesia.

There are several options under the mommy makeover umbrella that can be included as part of your overall procedure. You may choose to have breast augmentation surgery/breast reduction, coupled with a tummy tuck and liposuction as part of your cosmetic surgery.

You probably have already done some homework on the topic and realize that you should see a board-certified plastic surgeon who is a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS). During your consultations you should discuss the procedures that will give you the best mommy makeover results and how long the recovery period will be.

The goal with many of my patients -- if they are good candidates for this surgery -- is to avoid having to come back to the operating room to complete the makeover, meaning that most want to optimize their time in the O.R. Most of the procedures can be effectively bundled together and completed in four to six hours, again depending on what you opt for. Most doctors don't like to exceed the six hour mark.

Mommy makeover is a general term that covers various types of plastic surgery designed to reverse the changes that occur due to childbearing and breast feeding. Mommy makeover procedures can include a tummy tuck, liposuction, breast augmentation, and so on. The amount of time spent under general anesthesia is directly related to the amount of surgery (number of different cosmetic procedures) that you are having done at the same time.

You should definitely consult with several board-certified plastic surgeons to discuss the plastic surgery procedures you'll need, how long the procedures will take, and what the normal recovery time is.

For example, if you have a tummy tuck coupled with breast implants, the entire procedure can take four to five hours. A breast lift and tummy tuck can take a little longer. For safety reasons, we usually don't like to exceed six hours in surgery because of the potential negative side effects.

Depending on what procedures you have done during your makeover and what time of day the surgery is performed, your surgeon may suggest that you plan on an overnight stay versus having it done on an outpatient basis.

Hi there,

Good question. A mommy makeover usually consists of a tummy tuck, possibly some lipo, and a breast lift with or without implants (most commonly with). Depending on the surgeon, this can take 4 to 6 hours of anesthesia time. Once you start to get longer than 6 hours or so, there is a case to be made for having the patient spend the night in hospital or at a recovery facility with a bedside nurse. Most of the time we can do a mommy makeover in about 4.5-5 hours as an outpatient procedure. The breakdown is approximately this:

Tummy tuck: 2 hours

Lipo: 30 extra minutes to tummy tuck if limited to the waist/flank areas

Breast lift: 1.5 hours

implant placement 1 hour.

The issue is not the length of the procedure but one anesthetic. One would rather combine the procedures to avoid multiple anesthetics and multiple recoveries. A mommy makeover typically includes liposuction, abdominal surgery and some component of breast surgery.  The timing can range from 3 1/2  hours to 6 1/2 hours depending on whether you have liposuction or a tummy tuck, breast augmentation or breast lift... The procedure can be performed on an outpatient basis.

Thank you for sharing your question.  A Mommy Makeover is usually a very safe combination of procedures.  If you are having breast implants with a Tummy Tuck, it usually takes about 4.5 hours.  A Breast Lift with a Tummy Tuck is about 5.5 hours long, which is still considered safe.  I would not worry about the time of these procedures.  Adding more than this would be a bit risky, but it is still done quite often.  Please choose a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon for your procedures.  I hope this information was helpful.

Best Wishes, Dr. B.

Hi-

Obviously it depends heavily on what is done but it has been fairly well documented that any elective cosmetic surgery that goes longer than 6 hours has a higher incidence of complications. If it does take longer than that time it is recommended that you stay with an overnight nurse or nursing facility. A typical mommy makeover (tummy tuck, breast procedure) usually takes 4-5 hours. Good Luck!

Depending upon which operations planned at least 4 to 8 hours of surgery tie. Mot MMOs are done in surgical staged operations....Best to seek many in person opinions from only boarded PSs.
