Is tumescent liposuction an effective technique?

I saw a video showing a doctor performing a tumescent liposuction, in which he said it's safe and effective, but in the video of the patient after a week, she looked bloated. She actually looked worse than before. Are the belly and love handles expected to dramatically improve after a longer period of time?

Good morning and thank you for your question. Tumescent fluid is used with all types of liposuction. We use this mixture of saline, lidocaine, and epinephrine to anesthetize the tissue and prevent blood loss.

After the procedure, your body will respond consistently by holding onto fluid and create a "bloated" appearance in some.  As time progresses though, the liposuctioned region improves in appearance.  The improvements take time though and seem to vary with age.  The older the patient, the longer it takes to heal.

Conclusion: tumescent liposuction should not be a marketing term.  We use tumescent solution in all liposuction despite the technique.

Hi. Thanks for your question.  Tumescent liposuction is a term that describes a procedure where fluid is injected into the site before the liposuction is performed.  It is not uncommon to have swelling and bruising after the procedure, and this may take several weeks or months to totally resolve.  Usually, the areas don't look too much worse, so I'm not sure about the situation with the video you saw.  I would suggest you meet with a board certified plastic surgeon to discuss your areas that need treatment in-person or with photos on-line.  Best of luck!

Tumescent liposuction is the gold standard technique. Tumescent technique is used for all types of liposuction; it provides both anesthesia and decreased blood loss as well as stabilization of the fat so that it can be removed more evenly. The swelling postoperatively is variable from person to person, and probably from surgeon to surgeon depending on technique. In the first week, we really cannot evaluate the results. The results on the table  at the conclusion of surgery are generally very remarkable. Liposuction takes a minimum of three months for most of the swelling to go away and at that point you will see great results, but they generally get better over the ensuing three months, as long as you have been faithful to a healthy lifestyle.

Liposuction is a very good technique for the appropriate candidate and performed by an expert in the field

We always use tumescent fluid with our liposuction procedures.

It is normal to be somewhat bloated and swollen after the post operative period, but resolves over time.

Tumescent is just the manner to achieve anesthesia. it is as effective as other methods but when you do it with tumescent, it is just local anesthesia so you might have some discomfort while it is being done as well as when you get the large amount of tumescent fluid injected. Commonly used by non-plastic surgeons that do not have privileges at a surgicenter to do the procedure
