Should I get Botox at 30?

Most of my friends are against it. They believe I'm way too young for Botox... but I started noticing fine lines around my eyes and I'm willing to try anything just to get my smooth skin back.

Dear brendilicious:

Yes, use Botox or retinoids to delay the onset of any creases which will develop a permanent etching into the skin. Most younger patients will use it for the "11's" between the eyebrows but also for the "crows feet" and lateral eyebrow descent.

Please seek the recommendations of a well experienced, Board Certified Plastic Surgeon, skillful injector with a certified Obagi ZO Skin Health support team for your best results.

If you start botox when you are relatively young, you will delay creases from developing. It should be done with some regularity as your budget allows.

The purpose of Botox injections is to correct wrinkles, especially in the forehead, and crow's feet. While lines are more common in the mod-age group and older, they do occur in the young age group as well. If you have wrinkles in the above areas Botox is a great way to improve them.

Hi-

Botox is an excellent tool to help smooth out those early lines your complaining of. You most certainly aren't too young to have it done. There is a big interest in prevention right now in plastic surgery to potentially avoid the deep lines that occur with facial aging by early Botox treatments. Good Luck!

Yes you should. Botox treatment can have a preventative effect on wrinkle formation. Start early, stay youthful.

Hi brendilicious,

Thanks for the question!  I understand your friends' point of view, but if you have fine lines around your eyes that bother you, you may benefit from Botox.  Young people like yourself also get Botox to prevent the up and down lines in between the brows when you frown.

It may make your friends feel better if you tell them that Botox is relatively affordable, the effect is temporary and complications are extremely unusual.

Hope that helps,

Dr. Horowitz

Preventative Botox is a method of treating fine lines before they become deeply etched wrinkles. It is increasingly popular among young women in their late 20s to early 30s who want to maintain smooth, youthful looking skin but are beginning to notice faint lines, even when their face is at rest. Many surgeons hold differing opinions regarding the most suitable age to begin Botox. One generally accepted belief is that Botox could be started when dynamic wrinkles begin to leave traces of passive lines, which are apparent even when the face is at rest.

Botox injections are composed of Botulinum toxin A, a substance that temporarily freezes the nerve endings of facial muscles. This means that facial expression and movement in the injected area becomes constricted. By receiving Botox treatments earlier in life, you can keep wrinkles from forming, particularly frown lines, forehead lines and crow's feet.

With respect to using Botox to address the fine lines you’ve noticed developing around your eyes, however, Botox may not represent the most effective treatment. Botox can be injected into the orbicularis muscles which are responsible for causing wrinkles beneath the eyes, but the weakening of this muscle can also mean mild slumping of the lower eyelid, as the orbicularis muscle holds the eyelid up.

A more effective treatment could be a small dose of dermal filler to plump the skin beneath the eyes. Restylane is a commonly used skin filler for this purpose. Another option is a gentle chemical peel to firm the skin beneath the eyelid. A board-certified plastic surgeon who specializes in Botox and dermal fillers will be able to analyze your unique characteristics and make a suggestion that will help you to meet your goals.

That said, it’s important to recognize that Botox is just one measure for safeguarding your skin against wrinkles. It is vital to adhere to a careful skincare regime which includes using sunscreen daily to prevent sun damage and premature ageing. Be sure you wear sunglasses when outdoors to protect your delicate under eye skin, and use a gentle under eye moisturizing cream.

You should start using Botox as soon as you start developing the undesired lines. It's better to treat them early than late

Thank you for your question. Botox is a great anti-aging preventative. It can help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles between the eyebrows and crow's feet by relaxing the muscles. I would recommend a consultation with a very experienced injector. Best wishes.

Thank you for the question. Botox can be used when frown lines appear at rest or are exaggerated at an early age. 30 is not too young to start using it especially if you are already seeing the lines.

If you start early you will delay/ prevent the appearance of permanent lines at rest. You can start with lower units and space out the sessions based on your needs

Consult a board certified plastic surgeon to discuss this further.

Good luck!

There is some thought that starting Botox young can help prevent future wrinkles. Since this is a newer trend, time will tell if this train of thought is true over time.
