What chemical peels are recommended for dark skin?

As an African American woman, I would like to know which types of chemical peels are recommended for people with dark skin. Is one better or more safe than another? What should I be considering?

Hi TriSsA,

I'm happy to tell you that many chemical peels are available for darker skin types, but to be cautious and to follow the appropriate post-peel instructions given by your provider.

At my office in Montclair, NJ we offer two levels of peels (I've listed our most popular options below), each to address specific concerns:

Superficial Peels:

  • Theraplex - Salicylic acid peels at 20-30% - great for acne-prone patients and those correcting the scars of acne.
  • Skin Medica - Vitalize and Rejuvenize peels (Jessner's solution + retinol) - perfect for acne sufferers and especially those females with hormone-related acne flares, great for improving overall skin tone/texture related to sun damage and aging.

Medium Depth Peel:

  • VI Peel - Several ingredients are used in combination with this peel to penetrate the superficial (towards the top) dermis - Multiple variations from the brand add/subject certain ingredients to address specific concerns and skin needs.

Make sure to do your due diligence in choosing your provider, as there is always a risk no matter what peel is used for side effects like hyperpigmentation (darkening of the skin), dermatitis, allergic reaction, etc.

No matter what your skin type I am confident you can find a provider and a treatment protocol that will work for you. And don't forget your sunscreen!

All the best,
