What is a SMAS facelift and how is it better?

I am 64 and a former BT telephone engineer, currently retired, and interested in undergoing a procedure that involves the contraction of facial and neck skin. Is SMAS facelift a good choice? I will appreciate your help with this situation.

Great question.  The SMAS layer is the fibrous layer in the face deep to the skin.  In facelift surgery, it provides the strength and staying power to the lift.  Facelifts that are skin lifts only and ignore lifting the SMAS tend to last only a few months and are not generally effective.
