What qualifications do doctors need to do liposuction?
What qualifications do doctors need in order to be allowed to perform liposuction procedures? Will I need to see a plastic surgeon or can a family doctor have the qualifications to perform liposuction if they've received special training?
Oh my gosh this is a great question- and to be fair, I may be a bit biased in my response (I often treat botched patients by non-plastic surgeons). Ask any board certified plastic surgeon will warn you: buyer beware. Family practice doctors do not have the fundamental training in surgery and critical care to manage complications if and when they occur. I'm sure some are great but please do not be fooled by a fancy lobby and advertising. Liposuction is life-threatening in inexperienced hands, as infection, bleeding, and even bowel and bladder injury (not to mention, death) can occur.

Hi! Great question! Make sure you go to a board certified plastic surgeon for this procedure. Every plastic surgeon has spent thousands of hours being trained and can offer you the safest way to accomplish your cosmetic surgery goals. We are also trained to take care of any complications that could arise. Do not go to other types of doctors... it would be like asking a plumber to fix your electrical system.
