Would a doctor do my breast reduction if I’m smoking?

Hello there. I’m a 55 yr old woman and I'm in need of a breast reduction. My problem is I smoke about 4 cigarettes a day. It’s been very hard to quit the after meal cigarette. My question is, are there any surgeons who would do my breast reduction with me smoking the 4 cigarettes per day? I really need the surgery because my back hurts so bad I can hardly walk. I’m interested in having surgery in Charlottesville, VA.

Smoking impairs wound healing and you should not have elective plastic surgery while smoking.  Certain procedures such as breast reduction, tummy tuck, and facelift and especially problematic with smoking.

It is strongly recommended that you stop smoking 4 weeks before surgery and 4 weeks after surgery to minimize the risk of wound complications and poor scarring.  That said, smoking 4 cigarettes per day does not preclude you from getting a breast reduction.  You would just be at an increased risk of developing these complications.
