Procedure review

My name is Liz from New York, New York and I am 27 years old. I have always been insecure about my crooked teeth growing up and as I started to make YouTube videos and trying to get into acting/appearing on TV as a hobby my teeth started to bother me more. Frankly, I felt like it really ruined the rest of my face and I always felt that if I could just fix them it would really improve my confidence speaking on camera and to new people.

At the age of 26, I decided to learn about the invisalign because I felt I was too old for traditional braces. It also seemed great because since they were "clear braces" I would be able to straighten my teeth while still being able to film my YouTube videos. If I needed to speak, I could simply remove the clear plastic and then put them back in later.

When I went to the orthodontist they took x-rays of my teeth to so they could order the proper invisalign trays. He used a dental harness to hold my mouth open and sprayed my teeth with a white powder. After taking the pictures, he told me it would take a few weeks to get the invisalign aligners. On my way out I talked with the office coordinator about the invisalign cost and if there were any payment plan options. We scheduled my follow up appointment; I left excited and anxious to begin my invisalign journey and finally have straight teeth!

I must admit, the first 2 weeks of the invisalign treatment was painful and I did question how I would be able to do this for a full year. The soreness wasn't just in my teeth but my jaw and head. It almost felt like I had jaw surgery. My orthodontist did warn me that there would be pain and soreness, but urged me to take ibuprofen if this happened.

In the beginning, every 2 weeks I got new invisalign trays and I usually went through the same process. The first 2 days I am very sore and it is even tough to eat some harder foods. As I get about a week into the tray, I start to not even notice they are there. This is a good thing because it means my teeth are properly shifting.

Some new trays are tighter than others but overall, it's a very easy treatment. I went from switching trays every 2 weeks to every week, which really was a game changer. If it was like that for me in the beginning I would probably have been done but I think every orthodontic treatment is different depending on the individual and their tooth movement.

I should note that the reason my treatments taking so long is because I took a trip abroad during the procedure and may have been removing them a little more than I was supposed to! By the time I got to the end of my final trays they didn't even fit my teeth. After I returned from abroad, I had the new photos taken and when I got my new set of trays a month later they fit like a glove.

The technology has changed a lot since I started and that was only a year ago. When I got my first set of trays, they used a camera, powder and harness to take photos of my teeth. The next time I had photos done, they used a special camera stick and ran it over my teeth.

I am once again changing my clear aligners every week and can totally notice the improvements. Every time I go back to get more, the orthodontist has to shave down the sides of my front, bottom teeth a bit so they come together. He told me if I had regular braces this would not have to be done, but I would also be stuck with a mouth full of metal wires so I recommend you deal with the cons and opt for the clear plastic.

I have had Invisalign for 15 months now and although I do experience soreness when changing the first 2 days, I am used to it now and I don't ever feel like I have to take pain killers for them. Only once during my whole procedure have I ever had anyone notice that I had them on! I was told that my treatment time would be a year, but like explained above it has been extended a bit.

Overall I am proud to say I'm a happy invisalign patient ; it has helped grow my confidence speaking on camera and to new people. With my new straighter teeth, I look prettier and more put together. By the end of this year I will have a new great smile and perfect teeth!
