Accutane Cured My Cystic Acne
Procedure specific satisfaction rating
I was in my late twenties when I was finally put on Accutane. I had extremely oily skin since I was teenager and this caused cystic acne on my face. I had tried all of the OTC products (e.g. Benzoyl Peroxide, Acne.org Regimen, Proactiv, etc.), strong antibiotics (Minocycline, Deoxycycline, etc.), different acne meds (e.g. Epiduo, differing, etc.) and nothing cured or even really helped my acne. Makeup didn’t even help cover up my acne. It was bad and I was desperate to find an acne medication that worked. Finally, my dermatologist put me on a course of Accutane. My dosage was prescribed as follows:
Month 1: 20 mgs twice daily.
Month 2: 30 mgs twice daily.
Month 3-6: 40 mgs twice daily.
I had to go on two forms of birth control and receive monthly blood tests in order to receive the following month’s Accutane prescription. This is part of the iPledge program you’re enrolled into when on Accutane.
I experienced the following side effects while on Accutane:
- Dry lips
- Dry Eyes
- Dry Skin
- Aches in bones
- Headaches During the First Month (Fixed this by drinking more water)
- Spots of Eczema on my forearms
- Slightly elevated cholesterol during months 3 and 4
I did not experience any of the following side effects while on Accutane:
Blood in the Toilet
I used the following products to mitigate the side effects from Accutane:
Cetaphil face moisturizer:
Carmex Lip Balm
Poland Spring 1 Gallon Water Jugs
Oil of Olay SPF 30 Moisturizer
Visine Eye Drops
My skin started to improve after the first month and gradually got better until month 4, when my skin looked perfect. I finished my course almost a year ago and my skin still looks amazing. I would gladly recommend Accutane to anyone suffering from Acne. It’s side effects are very bearable and I finally love my skin. I would be happy to answer anyone else’s questions about Accutane. There’s really nothing to fear when it comes to this drug.
