Accutane Was One of The Best Decisions of My Life! My Before and After Photos Prove it!
Hello! My name is Taylor and I am currently 20 years old. Having severe acne was a struggle of mine for most of my preteen and teenage years. Starting from when I was around 11 years old all the way up to 18 years old, my face was covered in acne. I saw a dermatologist for about a year before I was finally introduced to Accutane, and it changed my life. My skin started clearing up within a month and by the end of six months my skin was completely clear.
My acne experience started when I was in sixth grade, when little bumps started appearing on my forehead. In the coming years after that, my acne grew worse and worse until my face was covered in large bumps everywhere. I tried every over-the-counter product you can think of. I even tried many home remedies and natural solutions, but to no avail. Absolutely nothing helped my acne get better. After several years of suffering through this, I finally asked my mom if I could go to the dermatologist. Thankfully she obliged and I was set up with my first appointment.
My dermatologist’s name was Jessica, from Piedmont Plastic Surgery and Dermatology located in Hickory, North Carolina where I live. The people at the office were always welcoming and after being there a few times all the nurses would recognize and greet me by name. Jessica was a wonderful and welcoming lady. She included me in any decisions she made about my skin regimen and she answered any questions I had. In the following year, we tried several different combinations of pills and creams, but again nothing was working. By this time, I already knew what Accutane was and I knew that I wanted to try it. Nothing else was working and I was ready to see results. Finally, Jessica suggested the option of trying Accutane, and I immediately jumped on it.
Before starting Accutane, I was put on birth control pills for one month before I could begin the Accutane process. All patients on Accutane are required to be on two different forms of birth control while taking Accutane (for example: condoms, birth control pills, abstinence, etc.) because Accutane causes severe birth defects in children. Once I began taking Accutane I would come into the office once a month to get a blood sample and to take a pregnancy test. The blood test is to make sure that your body is handling the medication well. If they find any problems with it, then they will simply reduce the dose of Accutane you are on. How the dose works, is you start off taking one pill every other day, then after a month you take one pill every day, and then the final dose is alternating one pill a day and two pills the next day. Every month my blood work came back fine so I could stay on the regular dose of medication.
After the first month on Accutane I was already seeing results. My acne was smaller and less frequent. By month four my skin was almost completely clear and I could not be happier. However, the amazing results did not come free of side effects. How Accutane works is it severely dries out your skin and your entire body to get rid of the acne. This causes all your skin, but especially the skin on your face to become extremely dry. It can also cause nosebleeds, headaches, and sometimes even nausea. However most of these things can be avoided simply by drinking water, and I mean a lot of water. Since your body is being dried out you must keep drinking water to stay hydrated, and by staying hydrated you can prevent many of these things. Of course, I experienced extreme dry skin and dry lips, which I combated by using lots of moisturizer, lip balm and putting Vaseline on my face at night to keep the moisture locked in. I also experienced occasional nosebleeds, but they were never severe and were always manageable.
The typical Accutane procedure takes around six months, and by the end of my six months my skin looked amazing. At my final appointment, Jessica told me my skin looked wonderful and I was free to stop taking the pills. She asked me if I would like to have a topical cream to help with the acne scars I had, but I wanted to be done with pills and creams for a while so I decided to let the scars fade naturally.
It has been about a year since my treatment has ended, I am now 20 years old and my skin continues to stay clear. I do get the occasional pimple, but it is always gone within a day or two and I have not gotten anymore large pimples. My acne scars continue to fade and I have confidence they will be completely gone within another year. The dryness from the medication has gone away and my skin is suppler than ever. Doing Accutane was one of the best decisions I could have made for my skin and I am so glad I did it. I now can be confident in my own skin and don’t have to worry about breaking out. I would recommend Accutane to anyone who feels like they’ve tried everything and nothing is working. It truly works wonders
