I have been suffering with TMJ (temporomandibular joint dysfunction) for the last 2 plus years. I began noticing the issue with jaw pain after my wisdom teeth were removed in my early 20’s, I am now 26. I tried over the counter pain medication, physical therapy, a mouth guard while sleeping and every type of random mouth exercise someone had recommend. Unfortunately, none of these treatments worked! I continued to walk around with chronic jaw pain, pain that lingers and heavily effects my mood.

While watching a show about plastic surgery, I discovered Botox can help TMJ! After a few weeks of research, I found a cosmetic office trustworthy enough to poke me with a needle. I live in Vancouver, Washington, and the office I found is Skin by Lovely, located in Portland, Oregon. The reviews for Skin by Lovely were beyond what I expected and when I called the office to schedule a consultation, I was thrilled with the pleasant experience! This was my first time getting Botox, so I had no idea what to expect. The appointment I made was long enough to get my consultation and receive treatment. Rachel Pangilinan MSN, FNP-C was the doctor assigned to me. While I was in my consultation, I told her what I’d like to have done with my jaw, I also asked about preventative procedures for wrinkles. Rachel explained the process to me. Once I found out the total cost for the amount of Botox I wanted ($960), I decided to start with my jaw. Considering that is what I needed rather than what I just wanted. After our discussion of the procedure, Dr. Pangilinan decided it would be best to inject my masseter muscles with 40 units of Botox. I needed 25 units of Botox in the left masseter muscle and 15 units in the right masseter muscle. I needed more units of Botox in the left side of my jaw because my masseter muscle on the left side is much more enlarged. The muscle on my left side is so enlarged that you can grab it and move the muscle from side to side. Since 25 units were injected into my left side, the doctor said my face would slim down and look less swollen. After receiving 40 units of Botox, I paid $480.00 that comes out to $12 per unit. $12 per unit was a special for the month of March, normally Botox is $16 per unit.

When I was injected with Botox, it was not painful, however, I could hear the liquid being injected. It sounded like rushing water or how a pimple would sound while being popped. After my Botox treatment, I did have some swelling that lasted for a couple of hours. Within 48 hours, I noticed an improvement in my jaw pain. I didn’t notice complete relief until 10 days post Botox injections. There are days I wake up and have a sight feeling of tiredness in my jaw, but it is nothing compared to what I have experienced for the last few years. I honestly recommend Botox to anyone dealing with TMJ. It has been a life changing experience for me! Being able to live my life without jaw pain is the best thing I could ask for. I am only 11 days past Botox treatment and I am hooked. It’s worth the money! My experience was amazing and 100% worth every penny. I will go back for treatment and I will be recommending Botox to anyone and everyone suffering with TMJ or anyone looking for a cosmetic pick me up. The doctor said my face will take 3 months to slim out.
