Breast augmentation - Silicone breast implants

I’d been wanting breast implants for a long time. As a very athletic person, I was constantly losing weight in my chest area. I hoped that a breast augmentation surgery would stabilize this area and provide me with more balanced proportions. But I was also nervous about getting cosmetic surgery, weighing the pros and cons for about 2-3 years before finally getting a consultation.

Finding the Right Doctor

I communicated with some plastic surgeons through email, but Dr. Neil Zemmel was the first plastic surgeon I consulted with in person. I chose him because he’d followed up with me in a timely manner and had come recommended by a friend.

Consultation and Cost

The consultation showed me that I’d made the right choice. I was very comfortable during the whole process. The office was clean and tidy. Dr. Zemmel’s team was really friendly and just made me feel at ease. And Dr. Zemmel himself was nice and answered all of my questions.

During this time, we discussed cost, and he provided me with a quote at the end of the consultation that turned out to be more than I ended up paying (my responsibility was about $6,200). We also went over breast size and types of implants. At the end of it all, I had no concerns about going with him.

The Procedure

Surgery day came about a month and a half later. I don’t remember the actual breast augmentation procedure thanks to the general anesthesia. I do recall being nervous before being put under. This was the first major surgery I’d ever had. The nurses and anesthesiologist were really understanding and helped put me at ease.

Dr. Zemmel gave me silicone gel implants. At first, they were to be the same size. But during the surgery, he made a last-minute change. He noticed that I would need two different sizes to achieve a symmetrical look because of the structure of my chest. Thanks to his adaptive skills, I got the perfect look.

When I woke up from surgery, I was in pain. It was actually a lot more pain than I had anticipated. Thankfully, Dr. Zemmel had my painkiller prescriptions filled prior to the procedure, so I didn’t have to wait long for some relief. I spent about an hour and a half at the office before being sent home.

Recovery and Follow-Ups

I went home with pain meds, a surgical bra, and instructions not to mess with anything. I returned to Dr. Zemmel the very next day for my first follow-up appointment, during which time I was given a new bra to wear.

I’m not going to lie; the recovery process was uncomfortable. The bra helped ease some of the discomfort, but I was still feeling it for several more days. I was home for 7 days before returning to work. Of course, part of that was due to the timing of the surgery. My procedure was in late December, and I had a lot of PTO and vacation time to work with. Still, I would say that I didn’t feel ready to return to work until 5 days had passed.

It took about 3 weeks of healing before I really started feeling back to normal, and even then, I didn’t feel 100% (more like 85-90%). But despite the slow recovery process, I’d say I healed really well. The only complication I experienced was a single painful stitch. To be honest, it was more of a hiccup than a complication, and it went away on its own.

The Results

It’s now been about 4 months since the surgery, and I am 100% pleased with the results. The cost and discomfort were totally worth it.

I’m also glad that I chose Dr. Zemmel as my surgeon. He was friendly and thorough. He paid close attention to my needs and always knew what was going on with me and my situation. That attention to detail and personal touch inspired a lot of confidence and made me very comfortable with him as a surgeon. If I ever decide to have another procedure done, I’ll definitely be going with him.

Tips on Finding a Surgeon

In the meantime, I recommend that anyone looking to get breast implants make sure that they feel comfortable with their plastic surgeon during the consultation. I just had another follow-up and am looking forward to one later this year. It’s a long process even when everything goes right. Make sure you’ve chosen someone you trust.
