Procedure review

I’d been searching for a plastic surgeon for a long time before I found Dr. Jonathan Heistein. A bottom heavy 36H, I was one of those women whose boobs just keep growing no matter what. I went from being a B back in high school to a C in my 20s to a DD and so on.

My large breasts were giving me headaches, backaches, neck pain, and shoulder pain. Going braless for any amount of time, even in a bikini, was just about impossible. Finally, I’d had enough, and I started looking into breast reduction surgery about six years ago.

It took me a long time to find the right surgeon. My husband is retired military, so we use Tricare insurance. Tricare will give you a list of doctors that take their insurance, but they won’t tell you if they are in-network or out-of-network. After talking to several doctors who were all out-of-network providers, I finally found Dr. Heistein.

My Consultation

The consultation was quick and painless. After seeing what I was carrying around, Dr. Heistein readily agreed that I needed a breast reduction.

Having looked into this for so long, I’d done a lot of research on the subject. Most of the consultation was just Dr. Heistein confirming what I already more or less knew. He explained the process, talked about what I could expect in recovery, and promised me that I would be amazed and would wish that I’d done it sooner.

The whole consultation took about half an hour, including shooting some before pictures of my chest.

Insurance Coverage and Cost

Even with a Tricare health insurance plan, I was expecting to pay about $1k-$2k. However, when the insurance company told me my financial responsibility for the surgery, it came to only $25. I was so blown away that I had the woman on the phone repeat herself to make sure she hadn’t read the wrong piece of paper. Given this, I had some extra funds, and Dr. Heistein and I talked about putting them to good use.

That’s why, when the surgery day came around, I didn’t just get a breast reduction. I got a couple of fatty glaucomas removed from my arms. I also had a little tightening done on my arms, flanks, and abdomen. Dr. Heistein worked with me on the cost. When all was said and done, my total responsibility for the surgery was between $6.5k and $7k.

My Surgery

My surgery was performed on August 25th of last year, about six weeks after the consultation.  To be honest, I don’t really remember much. I was put under general anesthesia for the two and half to three hours it took to perform all of the agreed upon procedures.

I recall the pre-op experience being a positive one. Everyone from the nurses to the anesthesiologist made me feel relaxed. Afterward, I was groggy and uncomfortable, but I was not in much pain. All in all, Dr. Heistein removed about 3.67 pounds of breast tissue total from my chest.

Recovery and Results

The procedure was done on a Friday, so I had a couple of days during the weekend to relax as much as possible. Unfortunately, I had to be back at work that Monday, but I made it work.

During recovery, I had compression garments for my arms and chest. I also had wraps and bandages for the various surgical sites. Thankfully, I did not require any drainage tubes or other equipment. At first, I honestly felt like I’d been hit by a bus. My whole body ached. But it got better each day, and I was back to normal in a week or two.

When Dr. Heistein said that I was going to wish I’d done this sooner, he was absolutely right. I couldn’t be happier with the results. I no longer feel like my back is constantly going to flare up on me if I lay down the wrong way. I can wear bathing suits and even go braless if I want to. In fact, just two months after the surgery, my husband and I went to Hawaii, and I was able to wear a halter style bathing suit without getting any headaches.

Finally, Dr. Heistein assured me that my breasts wouldn’t grow back, and so far, he’s been right. It’s been over six months since the surgery, and I still have the same breast size that he gave me.

Overall Experience

Dr. Jonathan Heistein loves his job, and he’s an artist. I mean it when I say that any plastic surgery procedure I get in the future will go through him. He was considerate, especially where pricing was concerned, and talented.

What stood out the most though was his bedside manner. It’s not often you get a doctor who is personable and makes you feel like you’re somebody and not just a file they can collect money from. When I went in for follow-ups, he asked me about my day. We’d chat for several minutes before getting down to business. I never felt rushed or unwelcome.

I encourage any woman who is pain and considering a breast reduction procedure to go for it. If you can’t afford it, look into insurance and find a doctor that takes yours. Jump through whatever hoops you have to, but get that surgery. I can attest that you’ll be glad you did.
