I was about to turn the big 4-0 and really wanted a more youthful appearance. As you age, repeated smiling and facial expressions start to stick around, leaving lines on your face. As you age even more and your face begins to sag, it creates deep lines and folds on either side of your mouth that become unattractive and bothersome for people like me, who probably care too much about their appearance. I became really bothered by these “parentheses” lines around my mouth, not only because they were really aging me but especially because they were very asymmetrical. I was also really tired of dealing with makeup settling into those lines and making them look worse. I had already made an appointment to get my lips filled and the Doc suggested I do them both on the same day to get the best price since Juvederm is charged by the syringe, even if you don’t use it all. Some places will ‘bank’ your leftover Juvederm for you but that was not offered as an option. I paid $750 for each syringe. A typical price for a syringe of Juvederm is approximately $750 - $1000. Each treatment site will typically use 1-2 syringes of Juvederm. I only used a little less than a full syringe for my nasolabial folds and the rest was used for my lips. She began by wiping my treatment areas with alcohol and gave me a topical numbing cream to apply. After waiting about 20 minutes for the numbing cream to work, she started the injections around my mouth. It was minimally painful besides a prick sensation when the needle went in and I did not experience any bruising. I noticed that she wasn’t getting too close to my nose, which is where the folds were the deepest, so I asked her about it and she said it was because when you get too close to the nose it can create an overly puffed out appearance that is not attractive. She concentrated the filler in the lower parts of the fold and even used a little bit of the filler to give the corners of my mouth a more ‘turned up’ look. She even used a litter filler in a past acne scar to smooth it out. The results were immediate and I was very happy that it really made a difference in my overall appearance. Besides filling in the folds, it gave my face more symmetry and volume. There wasn’t really any swelling either and I was really impressed with how easy and painless the procedure was. I no longer had to clean out makeup from settling into my folds and makeup went on much smoother. I feel like this particular procedure, besides Botox, is important in achieving a more youthful appearance. It gives you a lot of ‘bang for your buck,” in my opinion. The filler lasted almost a year and a half before additional treatment was required. I feel like women really overspend on expensive luxury creams and serums at the department stores trying to achieve what filler will do for you literally overnight. Those worried about it being painful - it really isn’t. There are really minimal cons to getting filler, in my opinion. I actually can’t think of any at all. Save your money that you spend on fancy creams, lotions and potions for your face and spend that money on filler and/or Botox. Just get some inexpensive Cerave or Cetaphil and a good mineral sunscreen!
