Got Botox For The First Time at 34 and Have Been Getting it Ever Since (39 Now)
Botulinum toxin A
Botulinum toxin sounds pretty scary, doesn't it? The more common name for this toxin is Botox, the magical poison-sounding protein that prevents muscle movement. Yea... I guess that sounds kind of scary too. I am here today to tell you that Botox should not be feared. I have had it injected into my face for the past 5 years and I have not had any negative side effects. Admittedly, the first Botox treatment I had was a bit scary. I was nervous about getting it and wondered if I was making a huge mistake. I had the very beginnings of crow's feet but it was mainly my forehead lines I wanted to eliminate. I was 34 at the time and some of my friends told me I had already waited too long. Too long? Jeez - I didn't think 34 was over the hill. My friends convinced me otherwise though.
After holding back for a year or so, I finally gave in and decided to visit Dr. Jeanine Downie in Montclair, NJ. One of my cousins had gone to her for Botox and filler and told me she was fantastic. I figured 'what the heck.' I didn't want anymore forehead wrinkles and I wanted to do every anti-aging treatment possible. I don't think anyone wants to age, right? I guess some people want to 'age gracefully' but I am not one of them. Don't get me wrong, I don't want to look like a freak, but I want to look as good as I possibly can for my age.
Fast forward to my Botox appointment with Dr. Downie. Her office is a beautiful house converted into a medical office. All of her staff is very kind and sweet. Her waiting room is very comfortable too. (She's very popular, so you'll have a bit of a wait.) The injections themselves aren't a big deal. Dr. Downie charges by the regions I had treated (I've heard of other people being charged by the unit and I'm not sure how this differs from being charged by region). When she injected me, I didn't feel a thing.
Immediately after the needle is placed in your skin, there are some small red bubbles that appear at the injection site, but they quickly disappear. I didn't have any bruising or swelling at all after my injections. I also have never experienced any possible side effects from any of my injections. To be very honest, my Botox experience could not have been better. I will admit that after the first round of injections I ever had (when I was 34), it was a bit weird that your muscles don't freeze until a few days after your Botox injections. I expected them to immediately be frozen right after I received my injections. I was very surprised when Dr. Downie told me it would take a few days for the Botox to take effect. I was also surprised that I could still move my upper eyebrows a bit. My frown muscles weren't completely paralyzed and I didn't have a frozen look. My forehead muscles just didn't contract as much as it did before my injections.
My Botox usually lasts 4-6 months before I have to return to Dr. Downie. Even though Botox isn't cheap, I love that it's a very easy procedure to have done, doesn't come with any downtime and keeps my crow's feet and forehead wrinkles from bothering me. I've also not noticed a single new wrinkle in the past 5 years since I've been getting injections. I get great results from Botox and will use it to keep me young as long as it works. I'm a huge fan of it and I tell all my friends not to be scared about getting it. I also like the fact that if you get Botox before your lines get too deep, you don't need filler. Filler is much more expensive than Botox, so yea...I'm trying to avoid that.
