Had a Rhinoplasty When I was 42 and I'm Happy With the Results
I got a rhinoplasty because I was not happy with the bump in my nose and I thought the tip of my nose was a bit bulbous. I was 42 when I got my nose job. I figured I had waited my whole life to get rhinoplasty surgery and I had a lot of time to do extensive research on the best plastic surgeons in NJ to perform it. I wanted a surgeon who could give me a new nose that removed my hump and thinned the tip of my nose but left me with a natural look.
I consulted with four doctors before choosing my surgeon. Most had 3D imaging to show me what I would look like after the procedure. I asked each doctor to connect me with a few of their rhinoplasty patients. Some doctors I spoke with used the closed rhinoplasty technique (no external incision) and some used the open rhinoplasty technique, where you have a small incision across the base of your nose. From my research, most people's scars healed extremely well and this was not the determining factor in deciding which doctor to pick.
My rhinoplasty procedure was pain free. I think I was knocked out for about 1 to 1.5 hours. I honestly can't remember a single thing from the day of surgery. It was performed in a surgical center in my surgeon's building. I do remember waking up after surgery and being extremely thirsty. This is probably from the tube that was used to intubate me during anesthesia. Besides that, it wasn't too memorable.
Recovering from my rhinoplasty took a long time. The first few days were uncomfortable because of the packing in my nose but the worst part was waiting nearly a year for all the swelling in the tip of my nose to go down. I did not have any pain during my recovery and never had to take any pain killers. I looked acceptable after a few weeks but it was tough to be patient for such a long time while all of my swelling went away. My upper lip also felt a bit odd for a few months after my rhinoplasty. It felt like it was swollen and the muscle that controlled my upper lips wasn't functioning the same way. It did heal eventually.
It's been years since my surgery and I am very happy I had rhinoplasty surgery. The incision at the base of my nose has healed very well and my surgeon was able to give me the new nose I had waited decades for. My only regret is not having had this procedure earlier in my life.
