I Won’t Go Anywhere Else for My Regular Injectables
Before and afters
Botulinum toxin A
At 50, I’m no stranger to anti-aging injectables for fine lines. I’ve been getting them at regular intervals for going on about 18 years now. I’ve tried a variety of types and locations for these treatments, and I have to say that Melissa Giordano, the Director of Nursing at Dr. Gary Breslow’s office knows her stuff. I’ve been going to her for about five and a half years now, and I have no interest in going anywhere else.
Getting Started with Injectables
I’ve worked in plastic surgery before, so I’m familiar with injectables on a professional level, and I’ve seen what happens when they’re poorly executed. I have to admit that I was worried about looking like Renee Zellweger or another A-list star who’s had too much Botox. Because once that happens to you, you’re waiting months for it to go away. I didn’t want that to be me.
I started looking for treatments in New York City, where I was living at the time, and maybe I found some quality professionals and maybe I just got lucky, but I never ended up with a frozen or puffy face. I continued getting treated in NYC for several years and at a few different clinics.
Finding Dr. Breslow’s Office
Several years ago, I moved to New Jersey from Manhattan. At first, I shuttled back and forth between Jersey and the city, but it was a pain. I decided to look for someone more local. I did a lot of research on plastic surgeons, checked out websites, and looked at online reviews. Eventually, I came across Dr. Breslow’s practice.
I had a good feeling about them from the start. I checked out their site and looked at what their patients were saying about them. And the truth is in what the patients say. You want to see people who are satisfied and plan to come back. After doing some research, I decided to give them a shot.
I went in for some laser and microdermabrasion skin treatments, both of which I’d had before and knew how I would respond. Right away, I loved the office. Melissa was great and seemed very knowledgeable. She told me about conferences she’d been to, and just generally instilled me with a lot of confidence. I thought, “You know what, I’ll trust her with my face.” So the next time I needed Botox, I went to her.
I was immediately glad that I went with Melissa. The way she was doing her injections was totally different than what I’d been getting in the city. And she was able to effectively treat areas that I’d been unsure about, like my eyes. Thanks to her I can probably put off any kind of surgery around the eyes for another decade. In general, I look much better, and I much prefer her style.
Melissa also puts a lot of work into professional development. She’s always going to conferences to learn about new dermal fillers and techniques. She’ll learn alongside other medical professionals, including doctors, and get certified in specific drugs. Aside from being an all-round nurse, injectable treatments are her focus. She’s amazing at it and has the ability to spend so much energy on it. She’s a rockstar, and I lover her!
Melissa takes every treatment seriously. Before photos are usually taken of me prior to the injections. During this time, we also talk about different areas of my face and what I might like to focus on. They use this imaging tool that shows a virtual version of your head. It’s very Matrixy. It’s kind of weird at first, but it gives you a very realistic idea of what you have to work with and what you want to achieve.
So we’ll talk, and she’ll mark me up. Then it’s time to get started. She always offers me a numbing cream, which I usually refuse unless she’s treating my lips or eyes. Any given treatment lasts all of 10 minutes. That includes injections in about four different places: forehead, nose, eyes, and smile lines. We will improvise and play around a bit though, depending on what’s needed.
We’ve also tried several different types of injectable fillers, like Boletello and Voluma. However, my favorite is straight up Botox (botulinum toxin). It’s flexible, it goes everywhere, and I trust it. Still, I’m no stranger to trying new things and I trust Melissa to know what’s effective.
Recovery from treatments is a non issue. I experience the usual side effects and recovery times immediately after the injections, like some bruising and soreness. This comes with a couple of days of downtime, and that’s about it. None of that is out of the norm, and I have no concerns about the injections.
I don’t schedule ahead for treatments. I like to wait and decide organically when I think I need more. Of course, it’s difficult to see yourself in the mirror every day and notice when things are starting to change. Usually, my big warning sign is a headache when my forehead starts to move. When this happens, I look at the calendar, and it’s just about four months from my last appointment every time. It’s that reliable.
I recall a time when I was engaged and I wanted to look good for my wedding. Timing-wise and scheduling-wise they really accomodated everything that I needed. It just goes to show you how patient focused they are, which is important.
I will say that, like most doctor’s offices, they sometimes run late. Sometimes there are emergencies that pull them away and leave you waiting for longer than you’d like. As those things go, they are pretty good. About 30% of the time, I walk right in. Another 40% of time I wait for 15-20 minutes. The rest of the time is a bit of a wild card.
Scheduling things with Melissa can also be tricky. I always get in, but I might have to wait longer than I’d like. A big part of that is on me. Many people schedule their next appointment as they’re leaving their last one, something I don’t do, which is a testament to how popular she is.
Honestly, in general, I think it’s a better run office than a lot that I’ve been to in the city, which seems like an odd thing to say, because you’d think that New York City would have the best services. They are proof that’s not true.
The final results are great and the people are great. It’s that simple. I’m so pleased with the office and staff that I would absolutely go to them for surgical cosmetic procedures if it ever gets to that point. Thankfully, I don’t think I’m quite there yet.
Advice to Others
When you’re looking for a doctor, do your homework and ask a lot of questions. Find out what materials they use. Find out how often their patients return for additional treatments. Are they coming back after one month or six? Why is that?
Find out if the person responsible for administering the cosmetic injections goes to seminars or conferences. You want someone with their finger on the pulse of what is going on now in injectables. Like technology, medicine changes in a matter of months. You don’t want to find out three months later that an injectable you received was recalled.
Finally, once you find someone who’s knowledgeable and who you trust, stick with them.
