Juvederm Gave Me Lips I Love
Hello, I wanted to share my experience with Juvederm and the amazing world of fillers!
I entered into this filler world about 1.5 years ago when I got an opportunity to review a medspa in Washington, D.C. called Cultura Dermatology & Laser Center. I was extremely excited, because Dr. Battle is a world-renowned dermatologist. So, I was confident that my injector would be skilled, as creating the perfect pout is certainty an art form. I definitely recommend researching injectors and spas before booking your appointments!
Because this would be my first-time getting lip injections, I was nervous. I did a lot of research online about what to expect. I read everything from “expect major bruising and bleeding” to “expect major swelling” etc. I even saw videos on YouTube where some ladies looked like they got hit in the mouth after their injections. I saw more positive than negative results, so I decided to go through with the procedure.
On the day of my appointment, I arrived at Cultura Dermatology & Laser at my scheduled appointment time. I had a consultation with Dr. Battle (very nice) as well as other staff members. The entire staff looked like a million bucks, the center was clean, beautiful and inviting. I asked Dr. Battle when he suggested women start getting fillers, and he said around age 30. He says products like Juvéderm contain hyaluronic acid, which works with our body to rebuild the collagen we lose as we age. Fillers help slow down the signs of aging, while simultaneously helping to fill and plump the areas it's injected into. We all know that more collagen and plumping helps us look younger. This is right up my ally, as I was 31 at the time and beginning to experience some signs of aging. Although I do not have many wrinkles, I’ve always wanted plumper lips.
After consulting with Dr. Battle, I was taken to the injection room where I had another consultation with my injector. Once the consultation ended (always takes 10-15 minutes or less) the numbing cream was applied. A really good injector will apply the cream all around the mouth, not just the lips, so don’t be alarmed if that happens to you. This cream will sit for 15-20 minutes. It tingles and in my opinion hurts, well at least it hurts me. You will also feel like you can’t move or talk while this is on your lips. All of which is completely normal.
After 15-20 minutes, my injector wiped the cream off and began the treatment. I got 1 syringe of Juvéderm at this appointment. I wouldn’t say that the process is painful, but it doesn’t feel good. The numbing cream takes the edge off the needle going into the lips. After using most of the Juvéderm, my injector put a small amount of it in the areas where jowls develop. She did this because it was my first-time getting fillers and wanted to be safe. She said that overfilling the lips on the first go-round could result in an adverse reaction. So of course, I was more than fine with that. Once the filler is injected, your lips are massaged. This is necessary to smooth and shape the filler inside your lips.
After my lips were massaged, the injector cleaned my face up and I was all done. I was given a miniature ice pack to place on my lips, which helped reduce swelling and I was sent on my way.
The entire process, from the consultation to the procedure, took about 30-45 minutes. The major swelling and bruising I had anticipated did not happen. I was able to eat lunch just fine (once the numbing cream wore off). The next day, however, I did experience slight swelling and pain where the needle entered my lip. That lasted about three 3 days. The minor swelling was down by day three. During the first few days, my lips were really nice, plump and pillowy. My lips were a little smaller after fay four or five, which is when I saw my final result, because the swelling had completely gone away.
I did not have any large lumps or bumps from the Juvéderm injections. I give credit to my injector at Cultura for this. I have friends who have gone to other med spas where the filler could be felt in their lips. Which does seem normal, if you think about it. You are having your lips filled and lumps are possible and can be felt. But my injector did an amazing job making sure I had a smooth final result by massaging.
All things considered, I loved my experience with Juvéderm as a lip filler. I will never go back to my deflated natural lips!
