Laser Hair Removal Treatment Review With Video of My Experience.
I knew I wanted to get laser hair removal for a year prior to getting my procedure done. My main reason for getting laser hair removal was because I absolutely hated waxing and my negative experience with shaving my African American skin. I wanted a more permanent solution to get rid of my unwanted hair with better results.
When I started my laser hair removal treatments, I was 31 and now I am 32 years old. I did a lot of research before getting the procedure done, so I knew what to expect. I purchased a Groupon for Skinsations in Marietta, Georgia, which cost $250 and it covered all of my laser treatments. After receiving the Groupon, I called and was asked to come in for an initial consultation the same week. My aesthetician, Jeronia, was extremely informative and gave me the details of the entire process. She stated that she would be using a YAG pulsed laser that was very effective in stopping hair growth in women of color. During the consultation, Jeronia zapped a small test treatment area on my arm with the laser. I was told to monitor the spot for 24 hours for any redness or bruising. She said per Georgia Law, a consultation is required before any laser hair removal procedure is performed. She stated if I had no adverse reactions in the test area, I would have treatment sessions every 8 weeks until I was hairless, which can take about 2 years.
We scheduled an appointment for the bikini line area for the following week and I was instructed to shave prior to the procedure and purchased the numbing cream that the office sold. I came back the next week to start my first procedure with Jeronia. During this first procedure, we did the entire bikini area. The procedure was extremely painful. It felt like a rubber band was being snapped against my skin all over my body. I followed all of Veronica’s recommended instructions but laser hair removal is just painful, period. On a scale of 1-10 the pain is a 10. In my opinion laser hair removal is just as painful as waxing. The only difference is the long term benefit of permanent hair loss. The procedure takes about 5 minutes total, but the pain lasts about a second per zap. The laser feels like a sharp burning sensation, as opposed to waxing where the pain comes from pulling the hairs.
Once the procedure was over, I was instructed to put aloe vera gel on the site and ice packs for a couple of minutes. After my first procedure, we scheduled another one 8 weeks out. I continued to get the same procedure religiously every 8 weeks. By the 3rd procedure, I began getting laser by another aesthetician, Makayla. She was very sweet and patient. She allowed me to take breaks in between the laser zaps to help with the pain. By my 4th procedure the hair was still growing back, so we switched from 8 weeks to 6 weeks to further increase hair reduction. When I switched to 6 weeks I began to see a big difference. My hair was not growing back at all. I finally was getting good results from all of my treatments! Around my 6th session, I began getting laser hair removal on my upper lip and uni-brow. These are the facial areas that I waxed the most, so I decided laser hair removal would be a good option. We did not have to do a test for this area, since my body hair in my bikini area responded well to first treatments. The facial hair was not painful at all, it takes about a minute to work on that area and the only discomfort is the zaps during the procedure.
It has been a year since getting my laser hair removal treatment and I continue to return for touch ups to prevent hair growth. My bikini area is bare except for a few tiny hair patches that we are working one. I will discontinue getting the treatments when the aesthetician sees fit. I no longer get ingrown hairs and that area is very smooth. Overall I am satisfied with my decision to get laser hair removal, but I do not plan on getting other larger areas done.
