Microneedling Cleared Up Almost All My Acne Scarring
My name is Nic, I am 24 years old, originally from Portland, Oregon. I am currently living in Hollywood, California, working as a personal trainer and model. From age 22 to 2,3 I went through a really bad phase of acne. Most of my acne stemmed from improper dieting and overeating. My acne was uncontrollable for about a year and a half, with the majority of my breakouts on my forehead. They were deep and painful, to the point where it was frustrating just to wash my face at night.
About 6 months after having consistent acne, I went to the dermatologist and was prescribed doxycycline. I took this for months with no results; in fact, my acne just got worse. Granted, I didn’t change my diet at all, which had a huge overall impact on my active breakouts. At the age of 23, my girlfriend and I decided to move to LA so we could pursue our modeling careers. I knew if I wanted to continue modeling that I would have to change my diet to clear my acne. I slowly started cutting calories and my acne started clearing up, but I was left with NASTY scarring all over my forehead. Although my active breakouts were less and less frequent, my skin still looked, dull, rough, beaten-up and uneven. It not only impacted my confidence, but also my work. My agents stopped sending me on jobs and castings due to the severity of my scarring. During this time I was introduced to the procedure of microneedling by one of my agents. At the time, I was traveling back and forth from LA to Portland often, so she recommended I go to Quenby’s Aesthetics Medicine and Wellness Center in Lake Oswego, Oregon. Scheduling an appointment was easy and the staff was awesome. The procedure cost $325, and took less than an hour. After filling out some paper work in the lobby, I was directed back into one of the private rooms. The doctor, Rebecca Betz, introduced herself and gave me the run down. First, in order to numb my face, she applied a numbing cream and let it sit for about 10-15 minutes before she started the actual procedure. I have a very high pain tolerance so intense pressure was do-able for me, but they can adjust the pressure according to each patient’s request. The most painful areas were the boney parts of the face, such as the forehead and temples. Some areas you could feel everything, and other areas were very tolerable. Once the treatment was over I was given a post recovery kit with moisturizer, vitamins, etc. I was told the downtime could be anywhere from 1-5 days. After the procedure I looked sun burnt for almost an entire week and my skin was sensitive and very dry. I was also told to avoid any sort of sun exposure for a week or so. If you have a big event or party coming up, I would recommend giving yourself a few days to recover beforehand just in case. I do believe the amount of pressure and depth of the needle they use affects the the recovery time.
Since then I have done this procedure two more times, but I went to different offices each time. I found one office back in LA from Groupon, this session was just like the first one, but $80 with the Groupon and my recovery time was cut in half. This was at Dr. Elliot M. Hirsch’s office by Medical Aesthetician, Jo Halliday-Kinal. She was amazing, very friendly personable, and well educated. The third session I did back in Oregon while visiting for the holidays in November of 2017 at Spectrum Advanced Aesthetics in Tigard, Oregon. This treatment cost $89. I separated these treatments by about 10 weeks each time, and really started seeing results just a few months ago, so about 8-10 months after my first treatment. Almost all my scarring has cleared up, and my skin not only looks more even, but brighter, younger, and healthier. I can’t give microneedling all the credit for clearing up my face because I do think my biggest issue was internal (diet). But, in regards to clearing up my scarring, evening out my skin tone and giving my skin more glow, I would 100% recommend this procedure. You can find great deals, down time is minimal, pain is minimal and the results are satisfying and worth the price. Lastly, although some places may be cheaper than others I would always recommend to not just look at price, but also at reviews. At the end of the day it’s your face we are talking about, so saving a few bucks might not always be the best route to go. All three offices I went to did a great job and I am happy to have worked with each one.
