Procedure review

Hello All - I'm Doris and this is my review of my liposuction, tummy tuck and a Brazilian butt lift with liposuction procedures.

After giving birth to my final child in 2015, I was not happy with the way my body looked. I was especially not happy with my abdominal and rear end areas. My abdominal area had excess fat and loose skin and my butt sagged. My kids had certainly taken a toll on my body and I knew no amount of exercise and weight loss techniques would restore it. Knowing I did not want to live with my post-baby body, I began looking into various body contouring surgical procedures. I explored butt implants and butt lift procedures for my rear and tummy tuck surgery for my front. I also started looking for an excellent plastic surgeons to perform my procedures.

I eventually settled on going with Dr. Tania Medina de Garcia, a plastic surgeon in Santa Domingo, Dominican Republic. Picking a plastic surgeon overseas did not go over too well with my family, especially my husband, but it was more affordable and Dr. Medina had very high reviews and great before and after photos. My surgery date was scheduled from June 2017, just a few months away.

As my surgery date approached, I began to feel apprehensive about both the procedures and traveling to the DR. I had never met Dr. Medina and had never had major surgery. I questioned whether having a tummy tuck and butt lift surgery at the same time was too much for my body to handle. I wondered if my family was right - was I making a mistake traveling to the DR for an elective cosmetic procedure? After contemplating my options many times, I decided that I did indeed want to have these procedures. I found solace in the fact that Dr. Medina was board certified, had many patients who were very happy with their results and her assistant was wonderful in the time leading up to my surgery.

A few days before my surgery was scheduled to happen, I flew down to the DR. When I arrived, I got myself situated in the hotel and ran into another patient, who was also having surgery with Dr. Medina (I call her my 'surgery buddy').

The following day after I arrived in the DR, I went to Dr. Medina's office. Although I had spoken with her assistant for many months, I had never met or spoken with her. It was finally time to meet her.

I met with Dr. Medina and she was kind and courteous. She explained to me that I did not have enough fat for a regular butt lift, but by using liposuction to remove fat from my outer thighs and injecting it into my butt, I would be a good candidate for BBL surgery. She also confirmed that a tummy tuck was a good procedure to improve my abdominal laxity, or loose skin and excess fat. Lastly, I asked her if I was a good candidate for a breast lift. She told me I was, but said due my hemoglobin levels (12.9), she would not perform a breast lift, tummy tuck and BBL all at the same time. She told me I could return in 6 months if I was intent on having a breast lift. I agreed with her and appreciated that she cared more about my health and safety than making a few extra bucks off an additional procedure. Before leaving her office, I gave them a check for $4,575, which was the final payment I owed them after the $500 deposit I placed when I booked my surgery.

After leaving Dr. Medina's office, I went to get blood tests, an EKG, x-rays and a cardiovascular check. That night, Dr. Medina's assistant called me and told me all of my tests checked out ok and I was cleared for surgery. She told me to arrive at the surgery center at 4:30 am the following morning.

That night, I couldn't sleep. I stayed up the entire night watching TV, trying to take my mind of the following day's events.

The following morning I arrived at the surgical center bright and early. When I got there, I was brought into a room with Dr. Medina and several other doctors. I was marked up and given a blue pill to calm my nerves. I was then wheeled into the operating room, given general anesthesia and that's the very last thing I remember before waking up in their recovery facility.

When I woke up, I was assisted by Denise, my personal nurse. Denise took care of me for the next two days. On this day, however, I did not feel well, vomited and slept most of the night. The following day, I felt better and was able to eat and drink. Denise had me get up and start walking around too. I was sore but not in a tremendous amount of pain. The pain medication they gave me seemed to be doing a good job.

At 11 am that same morning, Dr. Medina came to check on me. She told me the surgery went well, but I had lost a good amount of blood and my hemoglobin levels had dipped to 6.1, which were too low. She told me I needed a blood transfusion, which added $500 to my bill. I was given the transfusion later that day and received 2 bags of blood. I started to feel better after this transfusion and was on my road to recovery.

I spent one more day at Dr. Medina's recovery facility before I was sent back to my hotel. I still had two drainage tubes in me, but was told to come back in 5 days for a follow-up appointment. When I returned 5 days post-op to see Dr. Medina, I was told things were healing well and I would be able to go home in a little less than another week. My collection bulbs connected to my drainage tubes were still collecting a good amount of fluid, so I was told I would likely need to travel home with them and have them removed by a doctor in the states.

After 12 days of being in the DR, I traveled home. It was great to be back and see my husband. My body was still recovering, but my results started to look better with each passing day. I was also much more mobile and began feeling like my old self, just with a more contoured, better body.

It has now been a month since I had my procedure. I still having some swelling and bruising, but I am very happy with my results. My butt lift results are better than I expected. The fat injections appear to have done their job. I am also very happy with Dr. Medina and her medical staff. They have been great throughout this entire process. While I still have a lot more healing left to do, I would recommend these procedures to anyone who is not happy with their post-pregnancy body. I would warn those considering the same or similar procedures to do their research, find a great cosmetic surgeon and make sure they are physically and mentally prepared to go through with everything. Once you're 100% certain you want to do it, don't hesitate! I hope my journey helps you with your decision.
