My Eyebrow Lift and Blepharoplasty Went Extremely Well!
After many years of contemplating having a brow lift, I finally did it 2 years ago. While my journey hasn't been a piece of cake, I can honestly say it was all worth it. For those of you interested in having a brow lift (and upper and lower blepharoplasty), I've written a very detailed summary about my experience below.
Let me start off by saying that I've never had a surgical procedure in my life. For a woman who is 53 years old, I've been very lucky in that respect. Sadly, the one thing I have not been able to prevent is aging. Like everyone else, I too suffer from the effects of 9.8m/s^2 of gravity here on earth. I had previously done several non-invasive procedures to combat the effects of aging, including Botox, fillers, various lasers, chemical peels, skin creams, microdermabrasion, etc. All of them worked, but as I got older, my upper eyelids started to sag. Knowing that non-invasive treatments would only do so much, I began considering both eyelid (blepharoplasty) and brow lift surgery. When I first became interested in these procedures, I was a bit confused about how they differed. To me, it seemed like both procedures were supposed to accomplish the same thing - raise your upper lids.
After researching procedures for over a year, I eventually decided to consult with a plastic surgeon in my area who came highly recommended by a good girlfriend of mine. My friend had a full facelift done by this doctor and was very happy with her results. I too thought she looked great. The plastic surgeon's name was/is Dr. Amy Bandy, who is located in Newport Beach, California. (For those of you who watch Bravo TV's Real Housewives series, Newport Beach is located in Orange County.) Dr. Bandy is a board certified plastic surgeon, which was important to me, because my husband is a doctor and he felt more comfortable with me going to see a surgeon who did a plastic surgery residency. Given her credentials and board certifications in aesthetic plastic surgery, and my friend's favorable opinion of her and the results she got, I knew Dr. Bandy would likely be my best option. I scheduled an initial consultation with Dr. Bandy. The first thing I noticed about her office, was how kind her medical staff was! They were so sweet and kind. Then it was time to meet Dr. Bandy. I could immediately tell what a kind doctor Dr. Bandy was. I explained my concerns to her and she told me that I was a good candidate for both brow lift surgery and blepharoplasty. I could immediately tell what a kind doctor Dr. Bandy was - a kind, caring and compassionate doctor. I explained my concerns to her and she told me that I was a good candidate for both brow lift surgery and an upper and lower blepharoplasty. She told me the two procedures were complementary to each other. She further elaborated by saying that the eyelid lift would treat the excess skin on my upper/lower eyelids, while the brow/forehead lift would be used to treat the crow's feet outside the outer corner of my eyes. I would have small incisions near my hairline for the open brow lift (My surgeon did not use the endoscopic brow lift technique, as she said it would not over optimal results for me) and incisions hidden in the creases of my eyelids with the upper lid surgery (lower lid surgery incision is inside eyelids). Dr. Bandy also told me my frown lines, also known as glabellar lines, would be improved with my brow lift. She then talked about the potential risks associated with these procedures. I can't remember the exact price I was quoted for the procedure, but believe it was around $14-15,000.
After mulling over having both the eyelid surgery and brow lift procedure for nearly a month, I decided to call Dr. Bandy's office and book my surgery. Due to my age, I did have to go through a pre-surgery physical exam (blood work, heart tests, etc.) . I did that and everything came out ok. Then it was time to was for date of my procedure. I was anxious but ready for it!
The morning of my surgery, I arrived at the surgical facility early in the morning. I checked in with reception and was then brought into a room where I changed into a hospital gown. Then it was time to get hooked up to an IV line and heart monitor. When I was on the hospital bed being rolled into the operating room, my mind started racing with thoughts about whether all of this was worth it for a purely elective cosmetic procedure? Fortunately, before I could think about my situation too much, I was in the OR and being put to sleep with general anesthesia.
When I woke up in recovery, I was very groggy. My head felt a bit weird - it was tight. I wasn't in any pain and seemed to be comfortable from whatever pain medication I was given during and immediately after my surgery. My eyelids felt very tight and I felt swollen and bruised (which I was) all over the upper part of my head.
Over the course of my recovery period, I experienced some pain and plenty of swelling and bruising. My pain was managed very well with pain meds and it took several months for all of my bruising and swelling to go down. My eyelid incisions were well hidden after a few weeks and the swelling on my forehead took a few weeks before I felt relatively normal. I also experienced some headaches during my recovery but they eventually subsided. I heard this was likely caused from the disturbance to my forehead muscles, which tighten up as they heal.
Now that it's been over 2 years since my surgery, I can very happily say I am extremely ecstatic with my results. I have a very natural, yet youthful look that I didn't have prior to surgery. My eyelids have been lifted, my forehead lines reduced and my upper and lower brows have been lifted. No one notices my more youthful appearance than my husband, who says I look amazing. Talk about a real confidence booster! I also did not suffer from any side effects, which I'm very thankful for. Dr. Bandy and her staff were absolutely wonderful throughout the entire process and I have recommended her to several of my friends and my cousin. She's great!
