My Rhinoplasty Experience: Preparation, Costs, Recovery, and Results
I don’t want to say that I never really liked my nose. However, I did have a nose that made me a little self-conscious. It was wide and a little chubby. Honestly, I didn’t love it, but I learned to accept it. It was my nose after all. But that changed when I overheard some people in my office talking about me.
You’d think that by your 20s things like bullying would be behind you. However, I heard a comment made about me that really stuck with me. My coworker said that I was pretty, but that when I smiled, my nose took over my entire face. After hearing that, I couldn’t stop thinking about it, and it triggered me to never smile in photos. Honestly, it was kind of devastating. I know I should have been able to move past it, but once something like that is in your head, it can just get stuck there.
Fast forward to my mid to late twenties (2011), and my now husband proposed to me. Of course, I was thrilled, but the prospect of having to smile in wedding photos really got to me. I knew that I wanted to feel comfortable smiling, so I decided that I needed to make a change. I opted to look into cosmetic rhinoplasty surgery.
Finding Dr. Breslow
Dr. Gary Breslow seemed like a natural choice. He performed a breast augmentation for a friend of mine as well as her mother’s breast reconstruction after her cancer. They both couldn’t recommend him highly enough. I also had the opportunity to see both results, and they were amazing.
Naturally, I went in to see him for a consultation. He seemed very genuine to me, which I appreciated, because I was really nervous. I mean, how can you not be? You’re doing something that’s altering your body permanently - something that shouldn’t be taken lightly.
Needless to say, I had a lot of concerns and questions for Dr. Breslow. I wanted to know what I was going to look like and if I was planning the cosmetic surgery too close to my wedding. He sat me down and explained everything, including how the process would work. He answered any questions I had about anesthesia, pain, and recovery time. Honestly, he covered absolutely everything.
I was very concerned about still looking like myself after the procedure. Dr. Breslow put my mind at ease. He told me “the worst thing that can happen is someone asks you who your doctor is.” It was clear that he shared my desire to achieve a natural look. I was so pleased with the experience that I booked my surgical appointment that same day.
Prepping for Surgery and Costs
During the consultation, we also talked about cost. The rhinoplasty cost around $7k, and I paid for it using CareCredit, which the office helped me set up. They made it really easy to get what I needed.
As my surgery day approached, his nurse stayed in contact with me. She had me come in a week before the surgery to get my bloodwork done and make sure there wouldn’t be any issues with anesthesia. She also called me the day before the surgical procedure to go over everything I could expect, including complications, and give me reminders are pre-surgical instructions, like when I should stop eating.
My facial plastic surgery was scheduled for just three weeks after my consultation. They worked with me to get it done sooner, so that I would be just about fully healed by the time my wedding rolled around nine months later.
I arrived early that morning, and I was absolutely terrified. I was changing my facial features! Thankfully, Dr. Breslow was there on time and ready to go over everything with me again. He was by my bedside again when I awoke from the general anesthesia a couple of hours later. At this point, I had a total headache, but overall the discomfort wasn’t that bad. I stayed at the office for another couple of hours to make sure I was recovering alright from the anesthesia, and then I went home.
I try to be as holistic as possible, so I didn’t take any of the prescribed medication. And to be honest, the pain wasn’t nearly as bad as I thought it was going to be.
There was some bruising, swelling, and discomfort, especially during the first couple of days. Probably the most uncomfortable part of the was having to sleep sitting up, which I had to do for the first couple of nights to prevent issues with blood clotting.
Dr. Breslow called to check in that night and again the next day. His nurses also called throughout the week to see how I was doing. On the third day, I went in for a follow-up during which they checked to make sure everything was OK and removed nasal packing from my nose.
I returned to work after about a week post-op. I wasn’t totally back to normal at this point. I still had some discomfort, swelling, and periodic headaches. But it was nothing that was going to hold me back from my day. All in all, I would say the healing process was a very positive experience with no complications or egregious side effects.
Dr. Breslow and his team make it very clear that there is likely going to be some degree of postoperative swelling for around six months to a year, and they aren’t kidding. Most of the swelling was gone in the first few months, but it was maybe nine months to a year before I saw the final results.
The wait was worth it, because they are the most natural looking results that you could ever imagine. Even people who knew me had no idea that I had a new nose. They knew something was different and would ask me “did you get a haircut” or “did you dye your hair.” They knew something was different, but they couldn’t put their finger on it.
Honestly, my life has been changed so much. I feel more confident and better about myself. At first, I played things pretty close to the chest. However, I’m now a lot more vocal about that fact that I’d gotten a nose job. I feel good about my choice to do so.
I’ve already recommended Dr. Breslow to a friend and would do so again. That nose surgery was the best thing I’ve ever done and I’d do it again in a heartbeat. Honestly, I was so pleased, that I went on to get a breast augmentation with him later on.
Advice to Others
You can’t rush this process. Most people want to see the results of their cosmetic procedures right away, but this is plastic surgery, and you will need to give your body time to heal. Understand that it’s going to take time for the swelling to go down and for the results to fully reveal themselves.
Along these same lines, don’t rush into a procedure with just any facial plastic surgeon. Find a board-certified plastic surgeon who takes the time to sit with you and answer your questions. Know that it’s OK to shop around. If a doctor ever makes you uneasy or just doesn’t feel right, then move on. You want a great doctor that’s dedicated to patient care. He or she should care about you, puts you at ease, and earns your trust. That’s how I feel about Dr. Breslow.
