My Tummy Tuck With Dr. Heistein Could Not Have Gone More Smoothly
Procedure specific satisfaction rating
I first sought out tummy tuck surgery because I’d lost about 50 pounds in a relatively short period of time. I tried to exercise and tone my tummy after such significant weight loss, but the excess skin just wasn’t coming off. So at 35, I decided to look into the procedure. This was my first time getting any kind of surgery let alone plastic surgery, so I was nervous, but I knew I wanted it done, so I set out to find a surgeon.
Choosing Dr. Heistein
I found Dr. Jonathan Heistein through word-of-mouth. I work at a hospital, and a few people I work with had used him for a variety of things, like breast implants, tummy tucks, and so on. They all had really good experiences with him, so I decided to check him out.
To be honest, I didn’t really spend much time looking at plastic surgeons aside from Dr. Heistein. There was one other doctor on my radar, but I was more comfortable with Dr. Heistein because my coworkers used him and his office was right across the street from me. I knew if I had any complications, he’d be very accessible.
I immediately had a good impression of Dr. Heistein. He seemed really friendly and outgoing. He could tell that I was nervous and he reassured me that everything would be fine, saying that he’d done this cosmetic surgery a million times. Honestly, he really got me to calm down about it and feel good about the choice I was making.
I saw him again for a pre-op consult shortly before the surgery. I was given a lot of handouts with information about when to stop eating, what to do after the surgery, how to spot signs of infection, and so on. I felt really prepared.
My brother drove me to Dr. Heistein’s office around 6:00 am. Understandably, I was really nervous, but everyone there was so friendly and they helped me stay calm. The whole process was extremely smooth. Dr. Heistein promised me that he would make me comfortable, and he did. I was given general anesthesia for the surgical procedure itself and painkillers afterward.
When I first woke up, I was admittedly pretty uncomfortable. My brother could tell I was loopy and in pain. He told Dr. Heistein that I was in pain and Dr. Heistein took care of it. I remember falling back asleep until close to when it was time for me to go home. I think I got home around 5:00 pm, which means I was there pretty much all day and was probably recovering at the surgical facility for five or six hours after the procedure.
Tummy Tuck Recovery and Follow-Ups
There was some swelling and a lot of soreness in my abdominal area. I also experienced a little bleeding from the drainage tubes. But honestly, that was all to be expected after that kind of surgery. Really, my recovery wasn’t bad at all, and I experienced no complications.
All of my follow-ups were routine and easy. I had a total of four follow-ups, the first being just three days after the surgery, and each time there were no concerns.
I will say that Dr. Heistein sent me home with these compression garments that were supposed to help with the healing process. Although he instructed me to wear them for about six weeks, I stopped after only four. I didn’t like them. They felt tight and I sometimes felt like I couldn’t breathe properly. Regardless, I didn’t have any issues.
About six weeks after the tummy tuck procedure I was about back to normal. I could do all of my usual activities and even exercise.
Overall Experience and Tummy Tuck Results
I love the results, plain and simple. My scarring is very minimal thanks to this cream that Dr. Heistein gave me. The loose skin in my lower abdomen is gone, and the whole area is looking really good.
I can’t say enough about the experience as a whole. I was very impressed at how friendly everyone was, Dr. Heistein included. The office staff greets you with a smile when you walk in the door. The entire staff cares about making you feel comfortable - it’s wonderful. Not a lot of businesses are like that. I would absolutely go back and am even considering it for a breast augmentation.
If you’re considering a tummy tuck or similar cosmetic procedure, then be prepared. It is abdominal surgery, so you’re going to need some help while you're recovering. Think about what you’ll need. Have some movies, magazines, pillows, and snacks that are easy to get to.
You should also have someone with you. I’m so glad that my mom was there during my recovery. I really couldn’t move much for the first several days, so having someone who could help me 24-7 was important.
Finally, know what you’re getting into. I was really prepared going into this surgery, because I had friends who’d done it and were able to give me pointers. That and I asked a lot of questions. You should too.
