What is Juvederm?

Juvederm is an injectable soft tissue filler made of hyaluronic acid. It is used to treat moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds. As we age, our bodies produce less collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid. The hyaluronic acid in Juvederm replaces this lost volume, warding off the signs of aging.

The Juvederm family of fillers consists of several different products which contain varying concentrations of hyaluronic acid. Juvederm fillers differ from other fillers on the market, such as Perlane and Restylane, by adding Hylacross technology to their hyaluronic acid gel.

Hylacross technology is purported to prevent ‘sizing’ or the production of hyaluronic acid particles of differing sizes during the manufacturing process. By having hyaluronic acid particles of a consistent size, Juvederm is able to flow more easily through a syringe while being injected.

The Juvederm Product Family 2018:

  • Juvederm Voluma XC is used to add volume to your cheeks. It was FDA approved in October 2013.
  • Juvederm Ultra XC is used to add volume to your lips. It was FDA approved in January 2010.
  • Juvederm Volbella XC is used to add volume to your lips. It was FDA approved in June 2016.
  • Juvederm Vollure XC is used for the treatment of facial wrinkles and folds around the nose and mouth. The wrinkles in these areas of the face are often referred to as ‘smile lines’ or ‘nasolabial folds.’ These types of wrinkles become more pronounced when individuals smile. Juvederm Vollure XC was FDA approved in March 2017 and is the newest filler in the Juvederm family of products.

The XC at the end of each filler’s name indicates lidocaine has been added to it. Adding lidocaine to the filler helps ease pain during your treatment.

Preparing For Your Juvederm Injections

If you’re contemplating Juvederm injections, it’s important you meet with a qualified medical professional. Many board certified plastic surgeons, dermatologists, nurses and physician assistants are trained to perform Juvederm treatments. You should ask your injector the following questions to ensure they have the necessary training to provide you with desirable results.

  1. How many years have you been injecting Juvederm?
  2. How frequently do you perform Juvederm injections?
  3. How many Juvederm injections have you preformed in your career?
  4. How many syringes of Juvederm will I require to receive the results I desire?
  5. How long will my results last?

You should also ask your injector for before and after pictures of patients they’ve injected. If they can not provide you with photos, find another injector.

Since Juvederm injections are typically performed on the same day as your appointment, you’ll want to stop taking blood thinners such as Aspirin, St. John’s Wort and ibuprofen. You should also refrain from consuming alcohol and smoking prior to your appointment. Avoiding these medications and habits will help prevent swelling and bruising after your injections.

How does Juvederm work?

When we’re young, fat is stored in our upper cheeks giving us a youthful appearance. As we age, this fat sags down creating areas of volume loss. This lost volume can be replaced with Juvederm injections. The main ingredient of Juvederm is hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid is one of the most hydrophilic or water loving molecules in existence. When it is injected into areas of the face that have lost volume, the hyaluronic acid molecules fill in the area that has lost volume, while pulling in water molecules to provide moisturization.
